Goal: Quantify decrease in area of Lake Mead from satellite images
Project Cost: $500
Project Time: 2 days
Description:
Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the United States and part of a system that supplies water to at least 40 million people across seven states and northern Mexico. Client had obtained these natural-color images were acquired in August 2000 and August 2021 by Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 from NASA and wanted to determine the decrease in Lake Mead's area over the 21 year time period.
Lake Mead (August-2000)
Lake Mead (August-2021)
The images qualitatively show the the decrease of water in the largest reservoir in the US, but the client wanted to quantify the decrease. Image analysis was performed by using MATLAB to determine the boundary of the lake in the two images, which was then used to compute the area of the lake in 2000 and then in 2021.

Comparison of Lake Mead boundaries
Using our proprietary image analysis algorithm, we were quickly able to analyze the two images and provide result to the client in 2 days at minimal cost.
